…nut squash!
That said, you can guess what made its way onto my dinner plate.
B-nut! A normal person would be sick of this by now, but not I. Plus, if it takes a new form, it doesn’t count as a repeat, right? Forget sliced or spread squash, you’ve not experienced the butternuttiness of this vegetable until you’ve mashed it. Mind you, I am mashed sweet potatoes’ #1 fan. And I still go bnuts over this side. Does it resemble something Gerber’s might sell in a jar? Sure. But if the delicious creations that come from oats and yogurt have taught us anything, we know that Thou shalt not judge a food by its mushiness. That’s in the Foodie Commandments, right?
Anyway, to prepare, I mashed up the butternut squash, added a little smart balance, salt and—the ingredient that works its magic every time—cinnamon. To. Die. For.
The main event was pan-seared tilapia with homemade spicy pineapple salsa. By homemade, I mean jarred Newman’s salsa mixed with pineapple and Sriracha hot sauce. It was a last-minute I-need-something-to-put-on-this-fish idea, but the sweet and spicy was on point.
A little too on point, I suppose. After dinner, all I wanted was more spiciness. So I turned to one of my all-time favorite snacks.
Disclaimer: I understand that most of you will think this sounds disgusting. That is fine. Still, I strongly encourage you to try it.
Good ole’ popcorn—not the spiciest of treats…
…Until you add this to the bag.
The result:
Call me a freak, if you please. I can take it, but I stand by—and frequently consume—this flavor combo. My roommate introduced the creation to me in college, and I’ve been hooked since my first handful.
Do you swear by any food combos that others find weird?
Still tasting the hot sauce,
-Sarah
Glad you went for it. Certainly entertained me (and made my mouth water, ya betch) while miserably writing my enviro paper. I do, however, feel it’s my duty to warn anyone who looks at this that the popcorn sriracha combo is a no-no. Gross. Sorry girl.
I love tomato sauce or avocado on eggs which some people find unusual, I even put tomato sauce on salad sandwiches.
Yes, I most certainly do. Grilled cheese with ketchup anyone? How about BBQ sauce on pizza crust? My mom is totally the self proclaimed “condiment queen” and I guess it have rubbed off.
Peanut butter and tuna for a tuna salad sandwich. Sounds wrong but it is oh so right
Sure my butternut squash resembles baby food!
Sorry, had to.
I am totally stealing this and adding my homemade walnut spread to mashed squash and taters! Thanks!

OMG, I don’t think that looks gross at all – I think it is kind of genius!!!! I have GOT to try that.
I always combine weird foods. One of my favorites (that is REALLY weird)…sharp cheddar cheese and peanut butter. I VERY rarely eat it, because, unfortunately, it’s kind of loaded with fat…but man…it is a GREAT combo…
Nope, that actually sounds pretty amazing to me!!!!! I love, love, loveee spicy food….so you know i’m trying that popcorn/sriracha combo next time i’m home. Ooooh, I cannot wait.
Hey Sarah, thanks for checking out my blog. Now I found yours too.
I’m with ya on the Sriracha…. I LOVE IT! I put that stuff on everything. Have you ever tried any of the different flavored kinds? They are hard to find, but oh so good.
Oh, and my favorite “eww” combo: peanut butter and miracle whip sandwiches. Seriously, I can’t tell you how many people have told me it sounds disgusting, then tried it and later told me it was their new favorite sandwich.
Weird food combos seriously are wazzup! I can’t think of weird shiz that I eat right now, except that I use RIDICULOUS amounts of ketchup on everything. And just “blogger food” in general is pretty weird to the general public (ie: my roommate who ate ramen noodles at 10 am this morning!!).. but it’s not like I’m judging because she thinks it’s nasty I eat cottage cheese with crackaz!
I LOVE SMART BALANCE ON ANYTHANG
ah i LOVE cock sauce in my popcorn! so glad i am not the only one!
haha love the post title – I thought you went all “Paula Dean” on me!
I can’t think of any odd combos off the top of my head, however, it is more like the WAY I eat things that get weird looks.
For instance, with pizza, I eat the toppings, than the cheese, than the trinagle part of the crust, than the thick part of the crust…LOL.

Oh I have totally thought about doing that before. I could practically drink hot sauce!
I always have to have a small silver-skin pickled onion with a cup of tea…so whilst my friends are dipping a biscuit into theirs, I’m munching on a pickle…some-what strange! xxx
Mmmmm…I love butternut squash too! I could eat just a big bowl of that with a little brown sugar and a teeny bit of butter and salt for every meal. I swear I could!
Haha, I can’t stop eating butternut (or any kind of pumpkin), either. Everybody thinks I’m a little strange but I simply keep munching it as long as they’re still growing in my garden.
i think it looks awesome!! i always like dipping popcorn in mustard.. ha! so yummy
